Belarus was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II but was taken back by the Soviet Union in 1944. It stayed under Soviet control until it declared sovereignty on July 27, 1990, and later independence on August 25, 1991. Since 1994, Belarus has been led by President Alexander Lukashenko, who is known for his authoritarian rule.
Belarus is often seen as a pariah state because of its political system and lack of cooperation with the United Nations. However, it has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.824, which means it is considered a highly developed country by UN standards.
